Pre Session Exercises
Every day leading up to the session you are to spent sometime visualising yourself as a non-smoker. What emotions will you feel in yourself as a non-smoke, how your life will improve and what other impact will it have on you and your family and friends. Think of yourself as an athlete and you are training your mind in preparation for the event and on that date you are going to beat cigarettes. It’s also good to tell someone that on that date you are going to stop; the influence of others can often be a good tool to motivate us.
Most of what a smoker gets from a cigarette is air and breathing deeply triggers a natural relaxation response. In the mind of a smoker they associate the feeling of relaxation with the cigarette and not with the process of breathing deeply. You need to start the process of associating relaxation with deep breathing and not cigarettes.
Three times a day take a moment and take 3 deep breaths and allow yourself to relax. Recall the feeling of relaxation in your body as you breathe and you have now started to associate relaxation with deep breathing.
Also before the session anytime you feel like lighting up take a moment take 3 deep breaths and allow yourself to relax. Take a mental note that deep breathing can help you relax and not cigarette!
There are also some great free resources out there to help people and information is always power. Sometimes just doing a bit of research on the issue can be enough; you may come across a photo or piece of information and just stay I’ve had enough.
Good luck and let me know if I can help!
